Overview

Role: Art Director

Google Hardware partnered with SpecialGuest to launch the Pixel 3a in spring 2019, with the campaign spotlight on the camera's Night Sight mode. The concept was radical: a fluid narrative following the device as it passed from hand to hand through various low-light environments. The commercial aired at Google I/O and during the NBA playoffs, showcasing the phone's ability to capture clear images in darkness.

Approach

The production featured precision choreography, with the Pixel 3a sometimes passed manually but primarily mounted to a robot arm moving through meticulously designed scenes. As Art Director, I helped execute a 100 percent on-set capture process — proving Night Sight's capabilities with zero post-production tricks. The spot also highlighted all-day battery life and the return of the headphone jack, which YouTube comments revealed was the real fan favorite. The work demonstrated how to showcase technical camera features through cinematic storytelling rather than spec-sheet advertising.
